07/01/2022 – Armagh Cathedral Sacred Art

In Armagh Cathedral there is a new statue of Ireland’s martyr primate St Oliver Plunkett.

This work by Irish sculptor Dony McManus commissioned by our present primate, Archbishop Eamon Martin draws together today’s feasts.

As you approach the statue you are struck by the suffering yet peace of the persecuted bishop whose feast is today.

It is also the feast of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus and the First Friday, the day dedicated to reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who so loved us as to suffer the cruellest death.

The image of St Oliver is placed in such a way as to draw you around the statue. As you approach the back you are in the presence of the Jesus bound and bloodied, you almost hear the words of Pilate “Ecce Homo”.

It is a short but unique pilgrimage that draws the pilgrim to kneel and pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary, contemplating the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Merciful Fount of the Most Precious Blood, and the loving communion of the martyr, St Oliver.

P.S. Lots going on this First Saturday. Praise God! Please make the First Saturdays to save souls and bring about peace, as Our Lady in Fatima said.

  1. Maybe you can make it to the RALLY FOR LIFE in Dublin. Holy Mass with two Archbishops at 12 Noon in St Saviour’s Church and then the rally.
  2. Just a reminder that 5 First Saturdays for Ireland continues on Saturday from 2pm. We will again join with the young people of Holy Family Mission to pray for our beloved Ireland and for peace in the world.
