04/22/2022 – Walter Macken
Fifty five years ago today, a national treasure, actor and writer, Walter Macken died at his home in the gaeltacht village of Menlo, Galway. Walter was a man of deep faith, attending daily mass when he could, and praying the daily rosary with his beloved wife Peggy.
Reading his works, especially his trilogy on the Irish Famine (Seek the Fair Land, The Silent People and The Scorching Wind), it is obvious that his strong faith was important in understanding his characters and accompanying them in their joys and sufferings.
One of the happiest days of Walter’s life was the day his son Walter Jr was ordained a priest. Fr Walter remembers his parents as important influences on his vocation and the priestly work he has undertaken since his ordination which included authoring the book “A Meditation on the Mysteries of the Rosary”.
P.S. Date for the diary for the Ladies. The fourth Annual Women of Faith Conference will be live on Radio Maria on Saturday May 7th from 2pm. We have great speakers for you: Sr Consilio (Cuan Mhuire), Wendy Grace, Dr Edward Sri, Sr Susan Evangelist, and Fr Freddy Warner.
