Rembrandt, a famous Dutch painter who was born on this date in the aftermath of the Protestant Reformation/Revolt.

It is unknown what his beliefs were though he had some of his children baptised in the Protestant church.Whether his painting reflect his faith or the faith of his subjects we will only know on the last day, but several of his paintings document a deep love of the rosary and its mysteries.

His paintings and etchings of the mysteries of the rosary (including the Luminous Mysteries) have helped millions of the faithful to meditate on the mysteries of the rosary over the four hundred years since he painted them. Of special interest, given the anti Marian and anti- rosary times in which he lived, are two beautiful paintings in which he sympathetically portrays elderly women praying the rosary.
