08/22/2022 – Queenship of Mary

Today is the feast of the Queenship of Our Lady, and in traditional liturgies it is the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The image of the Immaculate Heart encompasses both feasts and more.

Our Lady is pictured pointing to her heart which is ablaze with her flame of love for God who is Love itself and for us. Her heart is surrounded by her crown, not the usual crown of gold but a crown of roses which speak to us of not just that she is a queen but of the rosary. The crown that she desires from us her children, every day.

In the image Mary’s heart is pierced with a sword. She suffered every offence to her Son Jesus including every sin we commit. In fact the crown of white roses, our rosaries, seems to be like a bandage around her pierced heart.

And finally from Mary’s Immaculate Heart come rays of light in all directions. These are the graces of God which she is tasked with distributing.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, queen and Mother, pray for us!
