11/25/2021 – Pope John xxiii birthday

Today is St Pope John XXIII’s 140th birthday.

He was baptised Angelo. His family were poor but devout. The Rosary was an important part of his young life. As pope, he had many beautiful things to say about the rosary. Here are just a sample.

“The Rosary is a magnificent and universal prayer for the needs of the Church, the nations and the entire world.”

“This is the rosary of Mary, considered in its various elements, which are linked together in vocal prayer and woven into it as in a delicate and rich embroidery, full of spiritual warmth and beauty.”

“The Rosary is a school for learning true Christian perfection.”And here is his prayer to prepare for a worthy recitation of the rosary.

“O Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, I would like to be filled with love for You; keep me closely united with You, may my heart be near to Yours. I want to be to You like the apostle John. O Mary of the Rosary, keep me recollected when I say these prayers of yours; bind me forever, with your rosary, to Jesus of the Blessed Sacrament. Blessed be Jesus, my love..”
